The copy debate

Well the copying debate has been one I have recently found is alive and well in Facebook business page land. I am really surprised how offended people get when they decide that someone has copied them.

To set the record straight about our Dolls they are inspired by other dolls from about 300 doll magazines that have been collected and poured over. Patterns modified, enlarged, shrunk, hair changed etc but the base is still there. The base that someone may say that was copied from them. The one thing we can say with 100% certainty is that all their faces are individual because they are all hand painted by us.

I hope we would not be accused of copying. I have not yet found any dolls around that are the same as Tamar Valley Kids. We are proud to say no two dolls are the same and that is what we will strive to maintain.

Back to the copying debate. I have seen ideas such as Nappy cakes replicated over and over again, I love the idea but at the end of the day these have been around for a while and you can only do so much with a nappy. Don't get me wrong some I have seen are better than others. They sort of go hand in hand with the gift basket. No one can accuse anyone of copying, great idea still after 1000's apon 1000's have been created they never get old. Once again some better than others.

Sock monkeys are another over and over again have I seen sock monkeys and yes I love those cute little rascals but can any one person say that THE sock money idea was their idea really unless you go back around 50 years probably to some CWA meeting long long ago and maybe you will find Mrs Sock monkey THE original sock monkey lady.

So I would like to see all the lovely pages and creations just be happy that other people like their product as much as them and unless you can prove you are the original creator of your product please just strive to be better. After all competition makes us work harder, do it better and be the best we can be. I aks you to embrace your competition and consider that you may infact have come after them.

  1. Totally agree, if someone values their idea and feels that its individual, unique and shouldnt be copied they should get it copyrighted etc the same as a business name. But otherwise i think they should take it as a high compliment. Cheers

  2. very well said. It is sad that people get in such a huff over it, everyone has to get their ideas from somewhere and it would take a very good person to be able to copy exactly someones crafted item, if each item is hand crafted there will never be two exactly the same.
